Event Detail

The 2026 GAC Toyota Guangzhou Marathon takes place on Sunday 20 December 2026, bringing up to 30,000 runners to one of China's best-known road-running events. The 13th edition is a World Athletics Gold Label marathon, with a single 42.195 km race for men and women. Starting in Guangzhou's Tianhe district, runners follow a carefully measured city route along both sides of the Pearl River, passing through districts renowned for their Lingnan heritage, older streets and modern cityscape before finishing at Haixinsha.

Start, course and runner assembly

The race starts at Tianhe Sports Centre and finishes at Haixinsha Starlight Avenue. The 2026 route passes through Tianhe, Haizhu, Liwan and Yuexiu districts. Consult the organiser's newly released course map before race day rather than relying on earlier editions.

The start is split into four waves, all in China Standard Time (UTC+8):

  • 07:00: elite athletes and corrals A/B
  • 07:10: corrals C/D
  • 07:20: corrals E/F
  • 07:30: corrals G/H

Entrants should use the corral printed on their race bib and allow extra time for identity checks and start-area security. Reported corral entry windows begin at 05:00, with final access earlier for earlier waves. The exact 2026 race-expo and bib-collection schedule has not been verified; do not assume last year's collection venue or opening times apply.

Entry eligibility and registration

Standard applications closed at 18:00 on 11 September 2026 (local time). The 30,000-place field is allocated through a ballot, with successful applicants required to pay the CNY 180 entry fee by the stated deadline. The organiser's notices describe potential second-draw allocation of unused places in November; this is not an open general-registration extension and should not be presented as a new entry window.

Entrants must be at least 20 years old during 2026, and must demonstrate a completed marathon or two half marathons from the 24 months before the application deadline. Virtual race results are not accepted for qualifying purposes. Runners aged 65 or over have additional health-assessment and signed family-acknowledgement requirements. The organiser also recommends pre-race medical screening and appropriate distance-running training.

Practical race-day arrangements

The organiser has introduced a sustainability choice at registration: runners choosing baggage deposit can use the managed bag-storage service, while runners who elected not to use baggage deposit are designated for alternative post-finish warming supplies. The choice was made during application and was not intended to affect ballot odds. Officials encourage runners to reduce single-use plastics and use recycled clothing rather than disposable raincoats at the start.

The race concludes at Haixinsha, away from the start area. Plan accommodation and public transport with that point-to-point layout in mind, and check the official guide for metro access, road closures, final medical and hydration-station placements, bag-return procedures and category cut-offs. The organiser's 2026 prize structure includes bonuses for a new Chinese national marathon record.

For authoritative updates, consult the official Guangzhou Marathon website and the organiser's 2026 competition regulations. Government-published announcements also confirm the race's date, distance, route, waves, entry period and age requirements.
